Good Morning! On this day in 1904, the United States officially took control of the Panama Canal project in what became known as “Acquisition Day.” After buying out the failed French effort, the U.S. began work on the long-troubled canal, which finally opened to shipping in August 1914.
Star Wars Day may not be an official holiday, but May 4 (May the 4th to fans) has become a way to promote the franchise, from memes to merchandising.

DOJ Reaches Settlement in Babbitt Case
The U.S. Justice Department has reached a settlement in principle with the family of Ashli Babbitt, who was killed in the House Speaker’s lobby at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Babbitt’s family filed the lawsuit in early 2024, seeking $30 million for her death. Financial details of the settlement weren’t revealed.
The lawsuit—filed on behalf of Babbitt’s estate and her husband—alleged that U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd was negligent when he fired at Babbitt that day. An internal United States Capitol Police investigation cleared Byrd of any wrongdoing.
More than 1,500 people were criminally charged for participating in the January 6 events. Trump has granted clemency to many and commuted the sentences of several others who were imprisoned.

Military Parade Set to Celebrate Army’s 250th
The U.S. Army will hold a military parade in the nation’s capital on June 14 as part of its 250th birthday celebration—an event that also coincides with President Trump’s 79th birthday.
Plans call for about 6,600 soldiers, 150 vehicles, and 50 helicopters to follow a route from Arlington, Virginia, to the National Mall.
The parade will feature reenactors, demonstrations, and historical equipment spanning from the Revolutionary War through the Global War on Terror (Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria), alongside active-duty troops and cadets from U.S. military academies.
The event will require involvement from several federal agencies, including those requiring security. The Army plans to have soldiers from each of its 10 divisions represented in the parade, according to a U.S. official.
