ICE Protests Rock Los Angeles
President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Saturday as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement intensified across the city.
Protests began Friday when hundreds rallied in downtown Los Angeles to protest ICE immigration raids at three city locations earlier that day.
Demonstrations escalated Saturday as protesters set cars on fire and hurled rocks at border patrol agents, prompting the Trump administration to deploy the National Guard.
SCOTUS Ruling Gives DOGE Win
The Supreme Court handed the Trump administration a victory on Friday, giving DOGE access to Social Security Administration (SSA) systems containing personal data on millions of Americans.
The administration says it needs the access to carry out its mission of targeting waste in the federal government. The data it seeks includes Social Security numbers, medical records, and tax and banking information.
“We conclude that, under the present circumstances, SSA may proceed to afford members of the SSA DOGE Team access to the agency records in question in order for those members to do their work,” the court said in an unsigned order.
The Social Security Administration oversees Social Security benefits for retirees and disabled people and helps administer programs run by other agencies, including Medicare and Medicaid.
Gauff Upsets Sabalenka for French Open
In a battle of the top tennis players in the world, No. 2 Coco Gauff defeated top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 to win the French Open final on Saturday.
Gauff’s win makes her the first American woman to take the French Open title in a decade after Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in 2015.
It is the second major title for the 21-year-old, who won the 2023 U.S. Open. It marked the first time she has beaten the No. 1 player in the world in a major after four previous losses.
