War Fears Surge as Thailand, Cambodia Battle
Tens of thousands of people fled their homes in Thailand Friday as border fighting between Thailand and Cambodia escalated, leading to fears of a wider war in Southeast Asia.
The U.N. Security Council was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis late Friday in New York, while nations in the region offered to mediate to end the fighting.
At issue is a disputed area of the border between the two countries that first flared up in May, but surged anew on Thursday after a land mine explosion wounded five Thai soldiers and led to an exchange of gunfire, artillery and rockets.
The fighting has killed at least 14 civilians in Thailand, while Cambodia confirmed its first death on Friday.

One Killed in Univ. of New Mexico Shooting
Two people were shot, one fatally, at a student housing complex at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque early Friday morning.
U.S. Marshals arrested the suspected shooter at an apartment complex in Los Lunas, New Mexico, about 25 south of Albuquerque, the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office said.
The school ordered students to shelter in place Friday afternoon and closed its Albuquerque central campus as police swept the campus searching for the shooter.
The shooting occurred as the university was hosting its new student orientation, which involved approximately 400 students, and just days before UNM wraps up its summer session on July 29.
