Oregon, Illinois Challenge Guard Deployment
Illinois and Oregon are suing the Trump administration over what they argue are unauthorized deployments of the National Guard to their states.
In Oregon, a federal judge blocked Trump’s activation of 200 state Guard troops, then issued a second ruling stopping the administration’s workaround—sending troops from Texas and California instead.
President Trump said Monday he may invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy federal troops to Portland, calling ongoing protests there a form of “criminal insurrection.” The Insurrection Act permits the federal deployment of troops in extreme cases.
Illinois filed a parallel suit, saying the deployment to Chicago lacks a legal basis and is tied to limited protest activity near a suburban ICE facility. However, a federal judge on Monday refused to immediately block the National Guard’s operation in Chicago.

US Still Hurricane-Free in 2025
As of early October, no hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. in 2025—a rare calm that hasn’t happened since 2015.
Despite multiple Category 4 and 5 storms forming in the Atlantic, systems like Humberto, Gabrielle, and Imelda have curved away from the U.S., thanks to a confluence of unusual weather conditions.
Florida, often the bullseye, has stayed untouched so far, though the state saw brutal hits in both 2023 and 2024.
With La Niña conditions forming and Gulf waters unusually warm, forecasters say late-season threats, especially from the western Caribbean, remain very much on the radar.

List: Charting Government Shutdowns
The U.S. entered its 15th federal government shutdown on Oct. 1, 2025, after lawmakers failed to reach a funding deal.
Since 1981—when a legal opinion clarified that federal agencies must stop work during funding gaps—shutdowns have totaled 97 days across 15 events.
Ronald Reagan presided over eight, most lasting just a day or two; Bill Clinton had two, including a 21-day stretch in 1995; and Barack Obama had one for 16 days.
President Trump has had three, including the longest in U.S. history at 35 days in 2018, and the current one now nearing its second week. See the chart here.
