Article Icon 1Dog Helps Woman Wake from Coma

A Florida woman credits a golden retriever named Scrunchie with helping her wake from a medically induced coma after surviving a massive medical crisis.

Priscilla Timmons, 39, suffered a pulmonary embolism in March that triggered three cardiac arrests and organ failure, leaving her with just a 10% chance of survival.

While Priscilla was still unresponsive in the ICU, Scrunchie, one of the hospital’s therapy dogs, nuzzled her hand, prompting her first movement and sparking her recovery.

Priscilla spent 21 days in intensive care and has since returned to thank the care team—and the therapy dogs—who supported her fight back to life. Watch a video of Priscilla petting Scrunchie.

A quick-thinking mom in Minnesota is being recognized for her bravery after she helped rescue 22 elementary students from a school bus that caught fire.

Kari Thorp spotted smoke and flames coming from the bus outside her home and ran toward it, alerting the driver. Together, they evacuated the children just moments before the bus was engulfed in flames.

Her Ring camera later showed the kids safely gathered outside as tires exploded and the fire spread.

Parents and school officials have praised both adults for their fast, fearless response.

A nonprofit in western Alaska has rescued at least 180 dogs—and one classroom turtle—after flooding from Typhoon Halong left remote villages underwater and cut off.

Bethel Friends of Canines, with help from pilots and locals, has been airlifting animals out using whatever’s available, including backpacks and plastic totes.

Most of the dogs are being reunited with their families, while unclaimed pets are placed in foster care or posted online for ID. The group is still responding to calls, especially for dogs that are scared and hiding in the debris.

Everyone knows everyone’s dog,” one volunteer said. And they’re not quitting until every last one is found.

Friday Quote

“In my eyes, faith and medicine go hand in hand. There’s the science aspect, which consists of studies and medicine to treat us when we get sick. Then there’s the faith aspect, which helps give you hope to lean on. God told me to fight, so I did with all my heart.”
