Before gaining statehood, the region had been governed by seven different U.S. territories until Congress created the Montana Territory in 1864, leading to decades of political wrangling before its eventual admission.

 Supreme Court Halts SNAP Order
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on Friday night temporarily halted a federal judge’s order that would have required the Trump administration to make November’s full SNAP food assistance payments by Friday, Nov. 7.
Jackson said the pause will remain in effect until 48 hours after the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issues a judgment on the matter. Her order didn’t rule on the substance of the case.
Earlier Friday, the Trump administration had announced that it was preparing to fully fund the benefits in accordance with the original lower court’s order, even as Justice Department lawyers were trying to block it.
“The court below took the current shutdown as effective license to declare a federal bankruptcy and appoint itself the trustee, charged with picking winners and losers among those seeking some part of the limited pool of remaining federal funds,” Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote in the emergency appeal.

China Ups Naval Stakes
China launched its largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, marking a significant step forward for Beijing, which now has the world’s largest navy in terms of sheer number of ships.
The Fujian, the country’s third warship, is equipped with electromagnetic catapults which allow three different types of planes with heavier payloads to be launched at higher speeds.
The Fujian is only the second aircraft carrier in the world to use an electromagnetic catapult system, along with the latest American carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford. Most American carriers use older steam catapult technology that China has bypassed.

Sunset for Farmers’ Almanac
The Farmers’ Almanac, a 208-year-old American institution, announced that it was ending publication with its current 2026 edition due to financial issues.
Since 1818, readers have relied on the Farmers’ Almanac for long-range winter forecasts and articles about crops, gardening, cooking and home remedies.
”This decision, though difficult, reflects the growing financial challenges of producing and distributing the Almanac in today’s chaotic media environment,” the company said in its official statement.
A separate but similar publication, The Old Farmer’s Almanac, said on Facebook that it would continue publication. It’s the oldest survivor of that early generation of American almanacs, dating back to 1792.
