Good Morning! On this day in 1851, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick was published—and promptly flopped. Now hailed as an American classic, it opens with the iconic line, “Call me Ishmael,” and follows Captain Ahab’s obsessive hunt for the great white whale.
It sounds like a joke from an old sitcom, but today at The Flyover, we’re covering a case in Russia where a husband actually staged his own car theft to avoid going to the mall with his wife. That’s a man who really doesn’t want to go shopping!
Take your business from overwhelmed to unstoppable with today’s sponsor, Upwork Business Plus—the smarter way to find elite freelancers and AI-matched talent that helps you scale, simplify, and grow without the hiring headaches.

Shutdown Ends, Stocks Tumble
President Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday night to end the 43-day federal shutdown, the longest in U.S. history. The bill, passed 222–209 in the House, keeps the government running through January 2026 and restores pay for furloughed workers.
Federal employees were ordered back to work on Thursday, including air traffic controllers, but the FAA warns that air travel won’t immediately return to normal. For now it’s keeping total flight reductions at 6%.
The end of the shutdown added to economic uncertainty, as officials warned that some key data, such as October’s unemployment rate, may never be released. Market odds of a December rate cut have dropped sharply from 95% to around 50%.
Stocks took a dive Thursday, with the Dow falling nearly 800 points and the Nasdaq losing over 2%, as investors pulled back amid new doubts the Fed will cut interest rates next month.
