Question: What trees traveled the most miles before being planted?
Answer: Moon trees. In the 1970s, they were carried as seeds by astronaut Stuart Roosa on Apollo 14 as it circled the moon. After Apollo 14’s splashdown, the U.S. Forest Service oversaw planting of the seeds—Douglas fir, sequoia, and loblolly pine—and 450 Moon trees sprouted. Once they were big enough, NASA and the forest service planted them in parks and on the ground of state capitols, schools, and government buildings. At this point in time, only about 80 survive. Here’s a map showing their general locations.
