Winter Storm Slams U.S.
A massive, slow-moving winter storm spread across the U.S. on Friday, set to slam at least 40 states from Arizona to Maine with snow, sleet, freezing rain, and dangerous Arctic cold.
Forecasters warned ice damage could be severe, with about 177 million people under snow or ice alerts and more than 200 million under cold advisories. Wind chills near minus 40 degrees in the Upper Midwest prompted school closures. Here are weather maps tracking the storm.
More than 2,000 flights scheduled for Saturday have been canceled. The potentially historic storm was expected to hit the majority of air travel hubs over the weekend — including Dallas, St. Louis, Nashville, Charlotte, Atlanta, Washington, DC, and New York— before tapering off Monday afternoon.
Airlines issued travel waivers as cancellations mounted, and officials urged residents to stock up, avoid driving and prepare for outages as ice-laden trees and power lines could fail for days.

House GOP Ekes Out War Powers Win
The House on Thursday barely rejected a war powers resolution to block President Donald Trump from launching military action in Venezuela without Congress.
The measure originally seemed to end in a 215-214 win for Democrats, but Republicans kept voting open more than 20 minutes so GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt, absent while campaigning for a Texas Senate bid, could return and cast the tying vote.
That defeated the measure and sparked procedural protests from House Democrats. Only GOP Reps. Don Bacon and Thomas Massie joined Democrats in voting for the measure.

Map: What Each State Spends on Alcohol
Alaska spent the most money per capita on alcohol in 2024 at over $1,200, closely followed by Wyoming and Colorado, according to data tracking U.S. consumption.
The state spending the least per capita in 2024? That would be Utah, where a large religious population and strict alcohol regulations kept the state’s spending per adult at just over $600.
Several Southern and Midwestern states, including West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, also fall near the bottom of the rankings, while several New England states rank in the top 10. See where your state ranks here.
