Good morning! On this day in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first national Mother’s Day to celebrate America’s mothers, stating it was a chance to “publicly express our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

 Court Overturns Democrats’ Virginia Map
Virginia’s Supreme Court on Friday struck down the state’s new congressional redistricting plan, delivering a major setback to Democrats in a nationwide gerrymandering battle against Republicans for an edge in this year’s midterm elections.
The court ruled that the legislature did not follow proper procedures when it placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot authorizing the mid-decade redistricting. The decision overturns a map that would’ve given Democrats a 10-1 tilt in Virginia, leaving the existing 6-5 map in place.
An analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report predicted that nationally, redrawn maps will help the GOP in states including Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, and projects that Republicans “will pick up somewhere in the six to seven-seat range from redistricting.”

Cyberattack Hits 9,000 Schools
A cyberattack knocked a major international learning platform offline on Thursday, forcing final exam postponements and endangering the data security of 275 million students, teachers, and staff across nearly 9,000 schools worldwide.
A hacking group calling itself ShinyHunters struck Canvas, a widely used learning management platform, during finals week for many schools. Canvas parent company Instructure announced the platform has now been restored for most users.
The University of Illinois postponed all final exams and assignments for several days, while the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, moved May 8 exams to May 9. The University of Minnesota also alerted students to the breach, warning that hackers threatened to release personal information of millions of users.
Instructure said it found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government IDs, or financial information were compromised, and that its investigation remains ongoing.

Government Releases New UFO Reports
The Trump administration on Friday began releasing thousands of previously classified files on UFOs, now known as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, as part of an ongoing declassification project.
Among the newly released documents is a transcipt from the 1965 Gemini 7 mission, in which astronaut Frank Borman reported an unidentified object to mission control, saying “We have a bogey at 10 o’clock high.”
The files also include a debriefing from the 1969 Apollo 11 moon mission. Buzz Aldrin described seeing flashes of light inside the cabin and a bright light source he tentatively attributed to a possible laser.
The White House said additional declassified UFO records, videos, and government files are still on the way.
