Jobs Report Blows Past Expectations

U.S. employers added 172,000 jobs in May, more than double the 80,000 economists expected, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3% for a third straight month.

Leisure and hospitality led the gains with 70,000 new positions, followed by local government at 55,000 and healthcare at 35,000. Revisions to March and April added a combined 93,000 more jobs than originally reported, making it the strongest three-month stretch in more than two years.

Average hourly wages rose 3.4% over the past year. Economists said the stronger-than-expected numbers make it unlikely the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates anytime soon.

Trump Cancels Freedom 250 Concert Series

President Trump officially canceled the Freedom 250 concert series on the National Mall after most of the announced musical acts dropped out, replacing it with what he called “the Greatest Rally, EVER!” on June 24 in Washington, D.C.

Instead, Trump said country music star Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio will perform, alongside performances from the U.S. Army Band, the Armed Forces Choir, the U.S. Marine Band, and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.

Trump added that the rally would feature a speech by “a fine and highly dignified gentleman known as, President DONALD J. TRUMP!”

Many performers slated for the original concert series, including Martina McBride, The Commodores, and Bret Michaels, withdrew from the event, with several saying it had become more politically charged than originally presented.

First AI-Designed Vaccine Tested on Humans

Artificial intelligence has developed a “fundamentally new” type of vaccine that was then tested on humans for the first time, according to researchers at the University of Cambridge.

The new vaccine used AI to design a “super-antigen” that can train the human immune system against an entire family of viruses, not just one strain. The Phase 1 trial of 39 volunteers found the needle-free vaccine safe with no significant side effects.

A larger Phase 2 trial of roughly 200 participants is planned to measure how well the vaccine actually protects against illness. Researchers say the same approach could eventually target influenza and Ebola virus families.
