U.S. Intercepts Russian, Chinese Bombers

U.S. and Canadian warplanes intercepted several Russian and Chinese bombers in international airspace near the coast of Alaska on Wednesday, marking the first time the U.S. has observed a joint flight between the two nations.

NORAD officials detected and tracked the bombers and said the aircraft didn’t enter U.S. airspace but remained in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone which is considered part of international airspace.

Officials described the encounter as a test of our readiness by Russia and China and not an immediate threat and reiterated that the U.S. will “meet presence with presence.”

DNC Sets Fast Nominating Process

The Democratic National Committee approved new rules Wednesday that will allow the party to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris by virtual roll call as early as Aug. 1.

The newly enacted rules were a result of an Ohio law that originally required both parties to have a nominee by Aug. 7 to be eligible for the November ballot. The DNC convention is scheduled for August 19.

Vice President Harris is considered to be the presumptive Democratic nominee, and any challenger would need to file with the DNC and obtain signatures from at least 300 delegates by July 30.

Southwest Pivots to New Model

Southwest Airlines announced Thursday that after 53 years it will end its open seating policy next year and shift to assigned seats, along with offering premium-priced seating with extra legroom.

The move marks a transformational change in how Southwest operates and comes as the airline seeks new revenue sources after reporting that profit dropped 46% in the 2nd quarter.

Southwest executives cited research showing that 80% of its customers preferred assigned seats. The airline also reassured customers that they plan to continue allowing two free checked bags.
