Good Morning! On this day in 1948, the Berlin Airlift began when U.S. and British pilots delivered food and supplies by air to Berlin after the city was cut off by a Soviet blockade.
Inspired by our Et Cetera story below on CBS’s Essential American Songbook project, we’re asking our readers today to name their choice for the most essential American song. Vote in our poll below, or write in if we didn’t include your pick.
In moments like these, it’s easy to feel helpless watching tragedy unfold from afar. But together, we can make a real difference. Today, we’re partnering with Convoy of Hope to support families devastated by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. If you’re able, please consider joining us in providing urgently needed relief to those who have lost so much.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Hawaii Gun Law
The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a Hawaii law barring concealed-carry holders from bringing guns into public-facing businesses without the owner’s permission. The vote was 6-3.
Critics called it the “vampire rule,” since gun owners needed an invitation to enter shops or restaurants. Hawaii adopted it after a 2022 Supreme Court ruling broadened the right to carry.
In the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the law hobbled Second Amendment rights, exposing lawful carriers to criminal charges for routine errands. Read the majority opinion here.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, filed a dissent, calling it a property-rights dispute. The ruling could threaten similar restrictions in New York and California.

Twin Quakes Devastate Venezuela
Two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela within a minute of each other on Wednesday, killing at least 188 people and injuring over 1,500.
Measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, the back-to-back quakes were the country’s strongest in over a century. Photos show apartment blocks folded into rubble, with families sleeping in the streets for fear of aftershocks. See photos here.
President Trump pledged American aid, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. is rushing rescue teams and supplies to help with disaster recovery. Brazil, Mexico, and El Salvador are also sending crews.
The toll is expected to climb. The U.S. Geological Survey warned the total number of deaths could keep growing, with dozens of aftershocks still rattling the region.

Amazon Beats Walmart as Biggest Company
Amazon dethroned Walmart as America’s biggest company, taking the top spot on the Fortune 500 this month for the first time.
It was close: Amazon brought in $716.9 billion in revenue last year, narrowly edging Walmart’s $713.2 billion. Walmart has been the nation’s biggest company for the past 13 years.
The climb is the real story. Amazon first joined the list at No. 492 about two decades ago, and is just the fourth company ever to reach the summit as the nation’s biggest company.
The others were General Motors, ExxonMobil, and Walmart itself, now in second place as e-commerce and cloud computing reshape the economy. See the full chart here.
