82-Year-Old to Debut in Powerlifting Competition

Faith O’Reilly, 82, from Saguache, Colorado, is making headlines as the oldest female competitor in powerlifting’s debut at the 2025 National Senior Games, set for July 24-Aug.  4 in Des Moines, Iowa.

A former Iowa state powerlifting champion, O’Reilly picked up the sport in law school and kept training after retiring to rural Colorado.

She credits powerlifting with preserving her strength, bone health, and independence, and encourages other older adults to try the sport.

O’Reilly is no stranger to the senior games. In 2023, she teamed up with her younger sister and childhood friend to win gold in the women’s 75+ triathlon relay, forming the “Fab Fem” trio. Now, she’s excited to return to Des Moines, where she grew up, and prove that age is no barrier to strength.

‘Memory Cop’ Nabs 3,000 Suspects

British transport officer Andy Pope has identified over 3,000 suspected criminals using his remarkable ability to recall faces, earning him the nickname “Memory Cop.”

His knack for remembering faces—even years after seeing them in photos or grainy CCTV—has led to arrests tied to offenses including attempted murder and sexual assault. Even during the Covid pandemic, when many suspects wore masks, Pope identified them with uncanny precision.

A founding member of the Association of Super Recognisers, he was honored with a Chief Constable’s Award and says he just wants to help keep communities safe, though he admits he’s hopeless with birthdays and anniversaries.

Abandoned Beagle Becomes Hero in Japan

In Gosen City, Japan, a beagle once rejected for being too loud saved a Buddhist monk from a bear attack.

Tougen Yoshihara, the abbot of Youkoku Temple, was walking his 1-year-old beagle, Chico, in the woods when a bear appeared on their path. Startled, Yoshihara fell and dislocated his shoulder as he tried to flee.

Chico sprang into action, barking furiously and charging the bear, successfully scaring it off and protecting his owner. The dog had previously been returned to a kennel for his loud barking—a trait that turned out to be life-saving.

Now recovering, Yoshihara calls Chico his “savior” and says the pup has earned a place by his side, both at home and in spirit.
