Noah Simmons, a 28-year-old from Bristol, Virginia, purchased an old laptop at an estate sale for $20, initially aiming for retro gaming consoles.

On the laptop, he found a heartfelt story titled A Secret Place by 11-year-old Drew Smallwood, describing cherished memories of time spent with friends in a treehouse.

After sharing the discovery on social media, Simmons located Smallwood, now 33 and living in Nashville, Tennessee. They connected via video call and learned the laptop belonged to Smallwood’s grandfather.

The two, bonded by shared interests, plan to meet in person to explore more of the laptop’s contents, with Simmons hoping the story inspires others to embrace simpler times.

Cecilia Hernandez, a 22-year-old honors chemistry graduate from Rollins College, was joined by her service dog, Canela, at her May commencement, where Canela received a special patch for her contributions. Watch a video here.

Canela, a golden retriever, supported Hernandez through health challenges like endometriosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiac issues, alerting her to flare-ups and accompanying her in the lab with specialized protective gear, including goggles and booties. See photos here.

Hernandez, who thought she might not make it to graduation during her freshman year, credited Canela’s presence for her success and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at the University of Central Florida.
