Milton Wreaks Havoc: Deaths and Rescues
Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Florida’s west coast as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday, has caused at least 11 fatalities and forced millions to evacuate.
The storm unleashed tornadoes, powerful winds, and flooding, leaving widespread destruction. In Hillsborough County, more than 725 people and 128 pets were rescued from flood-prone areas after an unprecedented 356 emergency calls.
Environmental concerns have also risen over the potential release of hazardous waste from over 1 billion tons of radioactive phosphogypsum stored at fertilizer sites like Piney Point.
Additionally, the storm ripped the roof off Tropicana Field, where National Guard members and linemen had been staged for recovery efforts. Here is a photo.

National IV Fluid Shortage Forces Surgery Delays
Hospitals across the U.S. are postponing elective surgeries due to an IV fluid shortage caused by Hurricane Helene and the anticipated impact of Hurricane Milton.
Baxter International, the largest U.S. IV fluid manufacturer, temporarily shut down its North Carolina facility due to flooding, while B. Braun Medical closed two Florida facilities in preparation for Milton.
A recent survey found that 86% of U.S. healthcare providers are facing shortages, with 54% reporting less than ten days of supply. To conserve fluids, over 81% of providers have implemented protocols, and some have begun canceling procedures.
In response, some hospitals are giving patients Gatorade instead of IVs and warning of delays in elective procedures.
IV fluids are sterile solutions administered into a vein to deliver essential fluids, electrolytes, and sometimes glucose directly into the bloodstream.

Social Security Payments To Rise 2.5%
Social Security payments will increase by 2.5% in January, translating to an average increase of about $50 per month for over 72 million beneficiaries in 2025.
That’s down from the past two annual benefit hikes. For 2024 the increase was 3.2%, following a historically large 8.7% increase in 2023 brought on by the high inflation rate at that time.
Social Security Administration officials will begin notifying recipients about their specific new benefit amounts by mail starting in early December.
