Good Morning! On this day in 1923, Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in Hollywood, California, now known worldwide as the Walt Disney Company.
Scientists just voted to stop adding leap seconds to the world’s clocks, so if you’ve ever felt like time was slipping away, you were onto something. We have details below. In today’s poll, we ask whether you wear a wristwatch. If you do, what’s on your wrist? A gift, an heirloom, a splurge? Send us a photo and the story behind it.
Today’s sponsor, Alumni Ventures, gives investors access to curated startup opportunities across high-growth sectors, including deals alongside leading venture firms like Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer, and Y Combinator.

Four Dead in Elementary School Shooting
At least three children and one adult were killed Thursday when a gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, just before 1 p.m. PT. The suspected shooter is also dead.
Police said the first 911 call reported a shot fired into a car outside the school. Officers arrived within three minutes and reported the shooter was dead.
Law enforcement sources said the suspect was a 16-year-old boy, shot by a bystander, though Bend police have not confirmed who fired.
No names have been released, and Bend-La Pine Schools canceled Friday classes and athletic events districtwide. The district serves more than 16,000 students in Bend, about 160 miles southeast of Portland.

Trump Scraps Execution Livestream
President Trump said Thursday the Pentagon will not livestream the Dec. 3 execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, reversing a plan Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced earlier this month.
A public stream “might have been a strong deterrent,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social, “but many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die.” Hasan will still face a firing squad, and victims’ families may attend in person.
The plan had drawn bipartisan resistance, with GOP senators warning it would put the U.S. on the level of terrorist groups that broadcast killings. The Pentagon says Hegseth supports the decision.
Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 at the Texas base in 2009. His execution will be the military’s first since 1961, and its first by firing squad since 1945.

Timekeepers Vote to Retire Leap Second
The world’s timekeepers voted Thursday to retire the leap second, the extra tick added to clocks 27 times since 1972 to keep atomic time in step with Earth’s wobbly spin. Delegates from 69 countries approved the change at a conference near Versailles, France.
Earth’s rotation has been gradually slowing for millennia, mostly from the pull of the moon, but since about 2020, it has sped up. That raised the prospect of a never-before-tried “negative” leap second that could crash software.
Leap seconds in the past have knocked out Reddit and Cloudflare, since programs assume time only moves forward. In 2022, the measurement body agreed to drop them by 2035, and the speedup pushed the timetable up to 2027.
The replacement is a “leap hour,” added only when clocks and sunrise drift an hour apart, which at the current pace could take more than a thousand years.
