Good Morning! On this day in 1980, The Beatles’ superstar John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman as he was entering his Manhattan apartment building, generating worldwide mourning.
The tallest Christmas tree in one English town isn’t covered in tinsel or ornaments—it’s made of 100,000 balloons. The 25-foot display, assembled by 20 volunteers over five days, is now drawing crowds and raising money for charity. What’s the most unusual Christmas tree you’ve ever seen? Reply to this email to let us know.
Mistake tracking: Yesterday’s Trivia incorrectly stated that Kentucky became a state in 1891. In fact, Kentucky achieved statehood in 1792; the 1891 date refers to the adoption of a revised state constitution. We regret the error.
If you want to give someone on the streets more than just warmth this Christmas, your support of today’s sponsor, the inner-city ministry of Cru®, can help turn a night of survival into a moment of real hope with a Homeless Care Kit.

Federal Task Forces to Probe Food Pricing
President Trump signed an order launching new federal task forces to crack down on suspected price fixing and anti-competitive practices in the food industry.
The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission will investigate whether big players, including foreign-owned companies, are driving up grocery bills or threatening the security of the nation’s food supply.
If they find wrongdoing, the agencies can bring cases and recommend new rules. Lawmakers will receive progress reports within six months and again at the one-year mark, setting up a comprehensive review of America’s food system. Read the order here.

Miami, Alabama Make College Football Playoff
The 12-team College Football Playoff bracket is set, with Indiana earning the No. 1 seed after a 13-0 campaign, followed by Ohio State, Georgia, and Texas Tech, all of which receive first-round byes. See the full bracket.
Miami’s ranking improved two spots to secure the final at-large bid at No. 10, jumping Notre Dame, which they defeated in their first game of the season. Notre Dame was ahead of Miami in every CFP ranking but Sunday’s final one.
Alabama retained its No. 9 ranking after a blowout loss to Georgia in the SEC championship game, setting up a rematch with No. 8 Oklahoma, which had beaten them 23-21 in November.
Tulane, set for a rematch with No. 6 Ole Miss, and James Madison, matched up with No. 5 Oregon, rounded out the final two spots, marking the first time multiple Group of 5 conference teams have made the playoffs.

Pearl Harbor Voices Fading
For the first time, Sunday’s Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony in Hawaii was held without any survivors present, as only 12 remain alive, all centenarians, and none were able to travel.
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial (run by the National Park Service) notes that the day of remembrance continues every December 7, honoring the 2,403 Americans killed in the 1941 attack.
Among the most recent to pass: Warren “Red” Upton, the last known survivor who served aboard the USS Utah, died in December 2024 at age 105. Another veteran, Jessie A. Mahaffey, who survived the capsizing of the USS Oklahoma, died in March 2025, at age 102.
To ensure survivors’ voices aren’t lost, federal and public agencies have archived hundreds of oral histories, letters, photos, and diaries. Both the National Park Service and the Library of Congress (via its Veterans History Project) maintain extensive collections accessible to the public. Watch survivor Jessie Mahaffey discuss his memories.

Homelessness is at an all-time high this Christmas
This Christmas, far too many children and families won’t gather around a Christmas tree. Won’t enjoy a warm Christmas dinner with all the trimmings… won’t unwrap warm socks and sweaters, games, and other treasures.
They live on the streets—and the only thing they want for Christmas is to survive the cold and hunger for another night.
This is where you come in. Your generosity right now can transform a moment of hopelessness into a beacon of hope.
For more than 40 years, Homeless Care Kits—an outreach of the inner-city ministry of Cru®—have been bridging the gap between desperate need and divine compassion.
Each kit is more than a collection of warm clothing and supplies—it’s a tangible expression of God’s love, wrapped in blankets, gloves, and hope. Cru Inner City partners with inner-city churches to deliver Homeless Care Kits exactly where they’re needed most, demonstrating God’s love while building lasting community connections.
And today, you can provide a kit—including blankets, gloves, scarves, hats, socks, hygiene basics, and a clear gospel presentation.
