80 Million Swelter under Stalled Heat Dome

A massive heat dome parked over the central U.S. this weekend, putting roughly 80 million people under heat advisories from Dallas to North Dakota, with dangerous temperatures expected to last through the week.

“It looks like it is going to be pretty much stationary,” a National Weather Service meteorologist said. Worse, overnight lows won’t drop enough to offer much relief, letting heat stress build day after day, and high humidity makes it all feel hotter.

Forecasts called for 108 degrees in western Nebraska and near-record highs around 114 in Las Vegas, while even normally mild stretches of Montana and Wyoming are expected to top 100.

The worst of the heat shifts toward Texas and the Gulf Coast by Wednesday. The Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Pacific Northwest should be spared.

Surgeon General Targets Kids’ Screen Time

Early and excessive screen time can trigger severe neurocognitive delays in young children, harming attention, memory, and language skills, Interim Surgeon General Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos warned on Sunday.

“Parents are now fighting for attention from the screens,” she said.

To fight back, her office released a framework called “the 5 Ds”: discuss rules as a family, model good habits, divert kids to hands-on activities, disconnect during meals and car rides, and delay device access.

One suggestion: charge phones overnight in the kitchen, not kids’ bedrooms. The push builds on a May advisory linking excessive screen use to sleep disruption and mental health problems.

BASE Jumpers Parachute off Space Needle

Seattle police are searching for two men who climbed over the glass wall of the city’s iconic Space Needle Friday night and parachuted down from the 605-foot landmark.

The pair bought tickets, rode up to the observation deck, then ducked into a restroom and emerged wearing helmets before hopping the glass and leaping off. Videos of the jump quickly spread online. See the footage here.

Security guards lost track of where the men landed, and responding officers came up empty. Police described the suspects only as white men in their late 20s: one dressed all in white, the other carrying a blue and pink backpack.

The Space Needle said it is reviewing security footage and working with police as the jumpers face first-degree criminal trespass charges.
