 Big Beautiful Bill Clears Key Senate Test
President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill cleared a major hurdle late Saturday, advancing to full Senate debate after a razor-thin 51–49 vote.
The breakthrough came after hours of negotiations with Republican holdouts, capped by a late-night huddle between Vice President JD Vance and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), who secured support by promising deeper Medicaid cuts.
Senators Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) voted no—Paul over debt ceiling concerns, and Tillis in protest of projected Medicaid shortfalls for North Carolina. Shortly after the vote, Tillis announced he won’t seek re-election in 2026, citing a “breakdown in Republican priorities.”
Democrats stalled the bill’s momentum by forcing clerks to read all 940 pages aloud—a marathon that lasted nearly 16 hours and wrapped up Sunday afternoon. The Senate now enters 20 hours of debate, followed by a flood of amendment votes in what’s known as a “vote-a-rama.” Final passage is expected sometime today.

Sniper Opens Fire on Idaho Firefighters
Two people were killed Sunday after a sniper ambushed firefighters responding to a blaze on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Authorities said the shooter, who remained at large Sunday night, unleashed gunfire for hours, forcing crews to retreat and halting firefighting efforts.
Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed multiple firefighters were targeted. Officials are still unsure if there are additional casualties or how many suspects may be involved.
Gov. Brad Little condemned the attack as a “heinous” act and urged prayers for first responders. The FBI is assisting, and a shelter-in-place order remained in effect Sunday night.
