The Hughes family made Olympic history in Milan, bringing home two hockey gold medals in one week at the 2026 Winter Games.

Mom Ellen Weinberg-Hughes helped the U.S. women’s team beat Canada 2-1 in overtime as a player development consultant. Days later, sons Quinn and Jack Hughes delivered another 2-1 overtime win over Canada, securing the first U.S. men’s hockey gold since 1980.

Raised largely in Mississauga, Ontario, after their father Jim took a player development role in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ organization, Quinn and Jack came up through Canada’s hockey system before powering Team USA in Milan. Quinn led the team with eight points and scored the overtime winner against Sweden in the quarterfinals. Jack scored four goals and netted the golden goal in the final, losing teeth in the process.

Youngest brother Luke, also a first-round NHL pick, watched from New Jersey while on long-term injured reserve. All three brothers are the only American siblings ever selected in the first round of the NHL draft.

A Chicago man who can’t swim jumped into frigid Lake Michigan after a powerful gust of wind blew a stroller carrying an 8-month-old girl into the water at Belmont Harbor.

Lio Cundiff, 30, was on the phone with his aunt when he heard the mother scream. He dropped his phone, threw off his jacket, and jumped into the freezing water, holding the stroller above the surface as the baby dipped under the water a couple of times.

Bystanders lowered a jacket and a life ring, helping keep Lio tethered and guiding them to safety. The baby was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition, and Lio was hospitalized overnight for observation before being released the next day.

Two pairs of North Carolina State alumni who portrayed the school’s married mascots, Mr. and Ms. Wuf, are now planning real-life weddings after meeting through the Wolfpack spirit program in Raleigh.

Chandler Smith and Savanna Stone met in sixth-grade math class, became high school sweethearts, and later played the married mascot couple on the field at Carter-Finley Stadium. Last February, Chandler proposed beside the Memorial Belltower.

Chase Smith and Rachel Fenton met at mascot camp in 2021 and got engaged last August on a sunset hike up Hawksbill Mountain in western North Carolina. Rachel now serves as NC State’s mascot coach.

The original Mr. and Ms. Wuf have been “married” since 1981.
