Memorial Day Severe Weather Possible

The Memorial Day weather is likely to be split today, with cool, pleasant temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast and rain and possible severe weather in Southern states.

Areas surrounding cities like Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Memphis, and Fort Worth are at the highest risk of severe weather today, with possible flooding, severe storms, and tornadoes.

Today will cap off a weekend of festivities across the country, with the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., being the largest event on the docket.

Forecasts are calling for an overcast parade in D.C., which will include appearances from Kiss rock star Gene Simmons and four Medal of Honor recipients as the Grand Marshals.

The U.S. military has poured over $6 billion into recruiting and retention over the last three years, scrambling to reverse enlistment declines worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Navy, despite being smaller than the Army, led spending efforts, offering hefty bonuses to both officers and enlisted sailors, with some incentives topping $150,000.

The Army’s biggest comeback move was the launch of the Future Soldier Prep Course in 2022. This course helps borderline candidates meet fitness and academic standards. It now boasts a 95% graduation rate and has sent nearly 25,000 recruits to basic training.

Meanwhile, across all branches, pandemic-era setbacks, like school closures and rising youth disqualification rates, continue to shape a more expensive, more aggressive fight for manpower.
