At Least 89 Dead as Helene Pounds Southeast

Hurricane Helene caused at least 89 deaths this weekend, up to a third of them in North Carolina alone, while leaving over 2 million people struggling without electricity.

Helene made landfall Thursday night in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane, unleashing catastrophic flooding and extensive damage. See photos here.

The storm caused record-breaking rainfall, particularly in North Carolina, where towns like Biltmore Village experienced severe flooding, submerging the historic area under several feet of water. See drone footage here.

Helene is expected to dissipate by Monday, but heavy rain and flash flooding continue to threaten parts of the Appalachians.

SpaceX Reaches ISS, but Grounds Rockets

SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission successfully launched to the International Space Station for a five-month expedition, enabling the return of stranded NASA astronauts. Watch the launch video here.

However, a post-mission error caused the rocket’s upper stage to miss its target area during the planned ocean landing, prompting SpaceX to temporarily ground future Falcon 9 launches pending investigation.

The two-person crew arrived safely at the ISS on Sunday. They plan to return stranded astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to Earth in February. Watch the docking video here.

This marks the third time in recent months that SpaceX has temporarily halted launches.

Kris Kristofferson Dies at 88

Kris Kristofferson, the country music legend and Hollywood actor, died on Saturday at his home in Hawaii at the age of 88.

Kristofferson was a groundbreaking singer-songwriter who penned hits like Me and Bobby McGee and Sunday Morning Coming Down, and later found success as an actor, starring in films such as A Star Is Born.

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2015. See his life in photos here.
