 Mangione Pleads Guilty in CEO Killing
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges in the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, telling the court, “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died.” Each charge carries a maximum of life in prison.
Mangione, 28, admitted he posed as an investor and emailed UnitedHealthcare to confirm Thompson’s location before the fatal shooting outside a Manhattan hotel. He said he 3D printed the gun and attached a silencer.
His defense team immediately filed a double jeopardy motion to dismiss the separate state murder case, where trial is set to begin Sept. 8. Sentencing in the federal case is Dec. 18.

Trump Asks Supreme Court to Allow Ballroom
President Trump asked the Supreme Court Friday to allow construction of the $400 million White House ballroom continue while the case is appealed, after a federal appeals court upheld an order blocking the project.
The East Wing was demolished last year for the 90,000-square-foot project. The legal fight covers only the aboveground ballroom. An underground security bunker and military complex beneath it will be built regardless.
A divided D.C. Circuit panel ruled 2-1 that the ballroom requires approval from Congress, calling the president a “temporary tenant” of the White House. Construction continues for now while the Supreme Court weighs the appeal.

List: Retirement Costs Around the World
A map of global 2025 retirement costs puts the U.S. as the fifth most expensive country in the world to retire comfortably, at an estimated $738,000, behind only Singapore ($1.1 million), Iceland ($893,000), Switzerland ($859,000), and Luxembourg ($794,000).
Popular destinations come in far cheaper. Mexico ($356,000), Portugal and Spain (both $478,000), and Canada ($598,000) all come in below the U.S. figure.
Only four countries in the dataset clock in under $200,000: Pakistan ($187,000), India ($189,000), Bangladesh ($190,000), and Egypt ($190,000). Estimates cover roughly 15 years of retirement and exclude healthcare and taxes. See the full country list here.
