Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Ends

Fighting has resumed in the Israel-Hamas war after a seven-day ceasefire.

As dawn broke in southern Gaza yesterday, shells began to fall again. The new explosions and smoke marked the end of a break in the fighting that allowed for humanitarian efforts and prisoner/hostage exchanges.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas broke down over the release of further prisoners, and each side blames the other for the failure to continue the ceasefire. Israel claims Hamas refused to release 20 women eligible for exchange, while Hamas says it made multiple unaccepted release offers.

Sandra Day O’Connor Dies

The first female justice to sit on the Supreme Court died yesterday at 93. O’Connor was appointed to the court by Ronald Reagan in 1981 (his first nominee), and she sat on the court until her retirement in 2006. Her career spanned the tenure of three Chief Justices.

Known for her independent, middle-of-the-road voice, O’Connor often made the determining vote in high profile cases, and she sided with the majority in the pivotal ruling in 2000 that confirmed George W. Bush as the winner of the presidential election.

She died in Phoenix, AZ, from complications with advanced dementia.

George Santos Expelled from Congress

Members of the House of Representatives voted to oust New York Republican George Santos over a 23-count federal indictment.

About a third of House Republicans voted against the expulsion, and some raised concerns that removing a congressman before a conviction sets a dangerous precedent.

Santos has been indicted for a range of federal crimes, including lying under oath and credit card fraud in connection with donor money.
