Winter Storms Sweep Across U.S.
Bitter cold, snow, and dangerous winds are sweeping a wide swath of the U.S. heading into the weekend, putting 18 million people under cold weather alerts.
The alerts stretch from the northern Plains and Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and into the Appalachians and Northeast. Forecasters warned of snow squalls, near-whiteout bursts, and pileups on slick roads.
Farther south, the chill is pressing deep into the Southeast and Florida, where freeze warnings cover most counties and wind chills are expected to dip into the 20s in northern counties. In the Northeast, the coldest readings are projected for Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures running 10 to 20 degrees below average.
Meteorologists say the pattern is being reinforced by a polar vortex, helping keep the coldest air parked over North America for the rest of January and prolonging the wintry feel.

Trump Holds Off on Insurrection Act
President Trump said on Friday that he sees no reason “right now” to invoke the Insurrection Act after warning he might use it amid renewed unrest in Minneapolis tied to federal immigration enforcement operations.
Trump’s decision to hold off came a day after a Truth Social post accusing Minnesota leaders of failing to control “agitators” who threatened ICE officers and vandalized property following a shooting involving a federal officer. The city remains tense as protests continue.
The 1807 law would let a president deploy troops domestically, including federalizing the National Guard and potentially using active-duty forces, temporarily overriding normal limits on the military’s role in law enforcement.
Even as Trump called the authority “very powerful” and cited past presidential use, some Republicans had urged caution, saying they hoped local and federal law enforcement could stabilize the situation without invoking the statute.

Map: Weekly Grocery Bill State by State
A new state-by-state analysis shows significant regional disparities in grocery costs, with Hawaiian households spending $157 per week on food, 33% above the national average of $118.
The new study, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data through July 2025, found average weekly grocery bills rose 6.3% nationally. Alaska recorded the second-highest costs at $152 per week, followed by California at $127.
Geographic factors drive much of the variation. Hawaii’s reliance on imported goods and Alaska’s remote communities push prices higher. A bag of chips costs $6.79 in Anchorage but $10.49 in rural Unalakleet. California’s elevated wages, rent, and distribution costs contribute to its ranking.
Southern states show the lowest grocery bills. Arkansas residents spend approximately 6% below the national average, with Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, and Kansas also ranking among the most affordable states for food shopping. See the map here.
