U.S., China Trade War Heats Up

President Trump said Friday the United States would impose a new tariff of 100% on imports from China “over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying,” starting on Nov. 1.

The action was in retaliation for new export controls that China imposed this week on its strategically valuable rare earth minerals.

Trump also said that the U.S. would impose export controls on “any and all critical software,” and threatened to cancel his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping because of the dispute.

For its part, China slapped new port fees on U.S. ships and started an antitrust investigation into Qualcomm Inc., the latest in a string of tit-for-tat moves this week.

The Dow Jones index dropped almost 900 points on Friday as the dispute widened. On Truth Social, Trump posted that there was no way China “should be allowed to hold the World ‘captive’” with its rare earths policy.

Tennessee Bomb Plant Explodes

A massive explosion at a Tennessee bomb factory on Friday morning left at least 19 people missing and feared dead, officials said.

The explosion was reported around 7:45 a.m. local time at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, a military explosives manufacturer, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville. Photos from after the blast are here.

At a news conference, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis gave few specifics about casualties while families were still being notified.

He said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were among the agencies that responded to the scene Friday.
