Good morning! On this day in 1929, Albert B. Fall, Secretary of the Interior under President Warren G. Harding during the Teapot Dome Scandal, was found guilty of accepting a bribe in office, becoming the first cabinet member to be convicted of a crime.
The World Series, one of America’s greatest sporting events, opened last night without much public fanfare. One survey we saw indicated that many people weren’t sure which teams were playing (it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. the Toronto Blue Jays). The baseball fans at The Flyover are excited—how about you? Are you planning to watch this year’s Fall Classic? Let us know by voting in our Poll below.

Trump Ends Canada Talks Over Reagan Ad
President Trump terminated trade talks with Canada, effective immediately, after Ontario began running an ad featuring a speech from Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs and trade barriers.
The ad, posted on X by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, was narrated by an edited version of a radio speech given by former President Reagan in 1987. You can see the ad here.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation said the ad had used “selective audio and video” spliced together out of sequence and that it was examining legal options.
Trump cut off all trade talks after accusing Canada of using the ad to try to interfere with an upcoming Supreme Court review of tariffs. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government would take up talks again whenever the U.S. is ready.

Social Security Benefits to Rise 2.8%
Social Security will increase retirement benefits by 2.8% in 2026, or about $56 per month on average, the government announced Friday.
The increase will begin showing up in beneficiaries’ checks in January and is meant to help keep pace with rising costs. Social security is the primary source of income for about 40% of older Americans, according to the AARP.
In 2025, the increase was a bit lower, at 2.5 percent. “The cost-of-living adjustment is a vital part of how Social Security delivers on its mission,” said Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano.

List: States Ranked By Job Openings
A new list ranks Oklahoma No. 1 for job openings as the state’s revitalized energy industry drives employment growth and strengthens its labor market.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics measured open and filled positions in every state. Oklahoma had a 5.5% job opening rate, with Alaska second with a 5.3% rate.
Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, and the Carolinas—the so-called “battery belt”—also had near or above 5% rates, reflecting electric vehicle and battery manufacturing investments.
Florida and Texas had the lowest job vacancy rates at 3.7%. See where your state ranks.
