Trump Meets with Zelensky
President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Rome ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday, their first face-to-face discussion since an Oval Office spat in February.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung called the visit “a very productive discussion,” and said details would be released later.
Zelensky also spoke positively of the meeting, saying in a social media post, “Good meeting. We discussed a lot one on one. Hoping for results on everything we covered. Protecting lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire.”
The visit came as the U.S. continues its efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. Images of Trump and Zelensky huddling in St. Peter’s Basilica for their roughly 15-minute talk went viral.

Pope Francis Laid to Rest
World leaders and rank-and-file Catholic faithful paid final respects to Pope Francis at his funeral on Saturday, reflecting on his concern for people on the peripheries and his wish to be remembered as a simple pastor.
Presidents and princes attended the Mass in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, while prisoners and migrants welcomed Francis’ coffin at his final resting place in a basilica across town.
Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina in 1936, was known for a sharp political edge and he maintained a close relationship with many political leaders throughout his 12 years as the head of the Catholic Church.
The College of Cardinals will convene in Rome to elect Francis’ successor, a process not expected to start before May 6 to allow cardinals time to arrive and prepare.

Iran Blast Appears Unrelated to Nuclear Talks
A suspected chemical explosion and fire rocked a port in southern Iran on Saturday, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 750. One analyst speculated the blast was caused by the mishandling of a shipment of solid fuel intended for use in Iran’s missile program.
The blast occurred as Iran and U.S. officials met Saturday in Oman for the third round of negotiations over Tehran’s advancing nuclear program. There was no indication of a link between the two events.
The talks represent a milestone in the fraught relations between the two nations over Iran’s program, now enriching uranium close to weapons-grade levels. Saturday’s discussions were the first at the expert level, and they focused on details that could make or break an accord.
