Good Morning! On this day in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution was created by an act of Congress signed by President James K. Polk, following a bequest from English scientist James Smithson, who left his estate to establish an institution for the “increase and diffusion of knowledge.”

Trump, Putin to Meet in Alaska
President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska next Friday, Aug. 15, for their first in-person meeting since Moscow launched its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Trump suggested that a peace deal would include some swapping of territories with Russia, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared Saturday that his countrymen will not give their land to occupiers.
A senior White House official said planning for Friday’s summit is still fluid, and it is possible that Zelenskyy could participate.
Officer Killed, Gunman Dead Near CDC
A gunman shot and killed a police officer when he opened fire near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters and the Emory University campus in Atlanta on Friday afternoon.
Officer David Rose of the DeKalb County Police Department was killed by 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia. The gunman was found dead of a gunshot wound on the second floor of a CVS Pharmacy building across the street from the CDC campus.
The man suspected in a shooting at a Montana bar that left four people dead was captured Friday just a few miles from where the shooting happened.
Michael Paul Brown, 45, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. near where authorities had focused their search in the days following the Aug. 1 shooting at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, about 100 miles east of Missoula.
A law enforcement presence of 130 personnel stationed on a hill helped locate the suspect, who was armed.
Brown’s niece said her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years, and she and other family members repeatedly sought help for him.

Whatever happened to Segways?
The Segway was unveiled in 2001, hailed as a breakthrough in urban transportation that “will be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy.”
It never became the mobility revolution it promised. Only 23,000 were sold by 2006, hampered by its $5,000 price tag, urban regulations on sidewalk and roadway use, and its weight—it was very awkward to carry upstairs or into buildings.
Bad publicity hit the product after President George W. Bush took a spill off his Segway in Kennebunkport, Maine. A bigger blow came in 2010 when owner Jimi Heselden was killed after riding his Segway over a cliff. The original consumer Segway was discontinued in 2020.
Today, Segways are still valuable for specific uses, including law enforcement, sightseeing tours, and factory work—but not to replace the car.
