Trump Places 30% Tariffs on EU, Mexico
President Trump announced on Saturday that he will levy tariffs of 30% against the European Union and Mexico beginning August 1.
In a letter to Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on social media, Trump acknowledged that the country has helped stem the flow of illegal migrants and fentanyl into the U.S. But he said Mexico has not done enough to stop North America from turning into a “Narco-Trafficking Playground.”
Mexico has been the top trading partner with the U.S. this year. EU members Germany, Italy, France, and the Netherlands are among the top 15.
With Saturday’s announcements, Trump has now issued tariff conditions on 24 countries and the 27-member EU.
Swiatek Dominates Wimbledon Final
Poland’s Iga Swiatek earned her first Wimbledon title and sixth major championship on Saturday, overwhelming American Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0.
It was the first women’s final at the tournament in 114 years in which one player failed to claim a single game.
The 24-year-old Swiatek is 6-0 in major title matches. She won 55 of Saturday’s 79 points, while Anisimova was shaky from the start and made 28 unforced errors.
Reaching the final was a full-circle moment for Anisimova, who took a mental health break from the tour two years ago after playing in tournaments became “unbearable.” She previously was a semifinalist at age 17 at the 2019 French Open.
List: Ranking Recession-Proof States
Florida is ranked as the best-positioned state to thrive during a possible recession, according to a CNBC study.
The study considered factors such as economic growth and state finances but also the potential risk each state faces from higher tariffs and lower federal spending.
