Shutdown Layoffs Begin
The Trump administration laid off more than 4,100 federal employees Friday amid the ongoing government shutdown, with more layoffs to come, according to administration officials.
The most significant layoffs took place at the Treasury Department, with 1,446 employees receiving reduction in force notices Friday. The Department of Health and Human Services also saw major cutbacks, with roughly 1,100 to 1,200 employees affected.
The layoffs spanned five other federal departments: 315 workers in the Commerce Department; 466 in the Education Department; 187 in the Energy Department; 442 in the Department of Housing and Urban Development; and 176 in the Department Homeland Security.
The figures were detailed in a court document the Justice Department submitted in response to a lawsuit from unions representing government workers.
Biden to Undergo Cancer Treatment
Former President Joe Biden is receiving radiation and hormone therapy for prostate cancer as part of his ongoing treatment plan, according to a spokesperson.
Diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer in May, Biden is expected to undergo five weeks of radiation therapy while continuing his pill-based hormone treatment.
Doctors discovered Biden’s prostate cancer after he reported urinary symptoms that led to finding a small nodule, later classified as Gleason score 9 with bone metastasis.
Recently, President Biden underwent Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer from his forehead, leaving a small scar.
Actress Diane Keaton Dead at 79
Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, celebrated for her quirky charm and iconic roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather films, and Father of the Bride, has died at 79.
Keaton made her film debut in 1970’sLovers and Other Strangers, but her breakthrough came as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather in 1972. She later admitted she never read Mario Puzo’s novel before auditioning.
Her numerous collaborations with filmmakers Woody Allen and Nancy Meyers introduced her to new audiences and generations of moviegoers, earning praise for both her acting and her trendsetting fashion sense.
Keaton, who had not been seen publicly in six months and never disclosed any illness, leaves behind her two children, Dexter and Duke, whom she adopted in her 50s. See her life in photos here.

Whatever happened to Elián González?
Elián González became a national sensation in 1999, after he and his mother left Cuba by boat for the U.S., only to have the boat sink. His mother died, but Elián was rescued clinging to an inner tube and brought to his great-uncle in Miami.
A high-profile custody and immigration battle followed, pitting his Miami relatives against his father in Cuba. That ended with a federal raid on the Miami house, where armed agents took the child from the uncle, a moment captured in this award-winning news photo.
After being sent back to Cuba, Gonzalez grew up and studied industrial engineering at the University of Matanzas, and then worked in a state company handling tourism. In 2023, he became a deputy member of Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power
