Meta to Pay $17B over Teen Addiction

Meta agreed to pay up to $17 billion and overhaul how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram, settling claims from 29 states that its apps were designed to addict children. The deal ends what promised to be a landmark trial after one week.

The changes include teen accounts getting a two-hour daily default limit and a midnight to 6 a.m. blackout. Notifications go quiet during school hours, and stronger age checks aim to keep kids under 13 off entirely.

The deal spares CEO Mark Zuckerberg a potential turn on the witness stand. California’s attorney general said the settlement “will make social media less dangerous for our kids and make a world of a difference for children and their families.”

About $5.3 billion of the payout only arrives if TikTok and YouTube adopt matching limits. Meta is publicly urging both to sign on, and state officials say the changes begin rolling out within four to six months.

Deadly Nepal Flood Kills Over 160

Flash floods devastated Nepal’s Himalayan border region with China on Wednesday, killing at least 160 people and leaving more than 400 missing, reportedly including at least 54 Americans. Here’s a video of the destructive floodwaters.

An earthquake triggered a massive landslide that blocked the Bhote Koshi River, sending walls of water through valleys and destroying villages, roads, bridges, and six major hydropower facilities.

Nepal’s Tourism Board reported 341 foreign nationals unaccounted for, including 133 Indians on pilgrimage to Tibet’s Mount Kailash and tourists from at least 26 countries. Rescue helicopters have been unable to land in the hardest-hit areas. The death toll and number of missing kept growing through the day.
