US, Iran Closing In on Peace Memo

The White House said Wednesday it is closing in on an agreement with Iran on a one-page memo that would formally end the 68-day war, with officials expecting Tehran’s response within 48 hours.

The 14-point framework would trigger 30 days of talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, lift U.S. sanctions, and impose a years-long moratorium on Iranian uranium enrichment.

President Trump on Tuesday night paused Project Freedom, the U.S. naval mission to escort ships through the strait. He warned bombing would resume “at a much higher level” if Iran rejects the deal.

Even with talks underway, fighting continued. A U.S. fighter jet struck an Iranian oil tanker trying to break the American blockade Wednesday, and Israel hit Beirut for the first time since last month’s Hezbollah ceasefire.

Feds Sue NYT For Race, Gender Bias

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the New York Times on Tuesday, alleging the paper bypassed a white male editor for promotion in favor of a less-qualified woman to meet its race and gender diversity goals.

The 11-year veteran editor, who had extensive experience covering real estate, was cut from the final interview panel for the deputy real estate editor opening last year. The role went to an outside candidate the EEOC described as a non-white female with “little to no experience in real estate journalism.”

The Tuesday filing fits a broader EEOC enforcement push. Under EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, the agency has sued a Coca-Cola distributor over a women-only networking event and is investigating Nike’s diversity hiring practices.

Media Pioneer Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the brash media mogul who launched CNN and reshaped American television, died Wednesday after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. He was 87.

Turner, who won the nickname “The Mouth of the South” for his often off-color remarks, inherited his father’s Atlanta billboard firm in 1963 and built it into a broadcasting empire, pioneering the “superstation” concept with WTBS and launching TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies in the early days of cable.

In 1980, Turner debuted CNN, the first 24-hour cable news network, transforming how Americans and indeed the world consumed news. He sold Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner for $7.3 billion in 1996.

Turner was an avid sportsman as well. He skippered the winning yacht in the 1977 America’s Cup and owned the Atlanta Braves, who won the 1995 World Series. He also became one of America’s largest landowners, championing bison conservation. Here are photos from his life.
