Co-Pilot Tried to Crash Israel Flight
The co-pilot of a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane Wednesday morning, Israeli officials said, until passengers broke into the cockpit and subdued him. More than 170 Israelis were aboard.
Flight-tracking data showed the jet dropped over 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. The wounded captain, lying on the floor and covered in blood, reached up and released the cockpit door lock, a spokesman for the prime minister told the media.
A second set of pilots on board, due to relieve the first pair, landed the jet at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where both pilots were hospitalized. Passengers reached Israel on a replacement aircraft after eight hours on the ground.
Saudi authorities are holding the co-pilot, and Israel ordered identity checks on every pilot flying into the country. One passenger who helped stop the attack was still in his bloodstained shirt when he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The airline warned against “premature speculation” about a motive.

Trump, AI CEOs Sign Safety Accord
President Trump and the heads of the country’s largest artificial intelligence companies signed a one-page safety accord at the White House on Tuesday. He called it “morally binding” and “almost like a constitution,” and said the industry is policing itself.
The companies agreed to four layers of controls and audits, including internal evaluations, an outside auditor, and review by each company’s board. The text says it may make sense to codify the steps into law later.
It follows months of safety failures, including models that gained unauthorized access to other companies’ systems. Trump also signed an order telling the federal government to say “Super Intelligence” instead of AI, and said he will name a czar for AI within days.
The accord carries no enforcement mechanism. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has pushed to slow development, called the agreement only “a start.”

Last US Troops Leave Iraq after 12 Years
U.S. Central Command said Wednesday it had completed an “orderly withdrawal” of American troops from Iraq, ending a mission that began in 2014 against ISIS. About 2,500 troops had been stationed there for years.
It’s the second time the U.S. has pulled every soldier out. The first came in 2011, eight years after the 2003 invasion. Forces returned when ISIS seized much of Syria and northern Iraq and pushed toward Baghdad.
Roughly 4,500 American service members died across the two decades, most of them between 2003 and 2011. The withdrawal was negotiated in 2024 and kept on schedule by the current administration, with Sept. 30 as the deadline.
The remaining anti-ISIS mission moves to Jordan. Iraq’s prime minister marked the departure with a ceremony, and his government has pushed its deadline to disarm Iranian-backed militias to June 2027.
