Scalise Secures Speaker Nomination
In a 113 – 99 vote, Republican majority leader, Steve Scalise secured the GOP nomination for Speaker of the House during a secret ballot election yesterday afternoon. Scalise beat out Trump-endorsed Judiciary Committee Chairman, Jim Jordan for the party’s support.
After the election, several of Jordan’s backers claimed they would not vote for Scalise in the final vote, prompting Republicans to call a recess as they look to secure the votes needed to proceed with their pick.
Currently, the House is split 221 – 212, making it difficult for the GOP to secure the 217 votes needed for a majority decision. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who many thought would be the GOP pick, has offered to nominate Scalise on the House floor.
Republicans Look to Be Rid of Santos
Yesterday, Congressman Anthony D’Esposito of New York announced the New York House Republicans were putting measures in place to expel Representative George Santos from the legislative body. This resolution is backed by fellow New York congressional members.
In a message on X, D’Esposito referred to Representative Santos as the “People’s House fraudster.” This comes just one day after New York prosecutors charged the congressman with 10 new criminal charges, bringing his rap sheet up to 23 charges in total.
Santos is accused of stealing campaign contributors’ financial information, wire fraud, and theft of public funds.
Hamas Weaponizes the Web
Hamas has been disseminating videos detailing the brutal treatment of civilians and soldiers. Through social media sites like X and Telegram, the militia is promoting propaganda while simultaneously spreading violent imagery.
In the aftermath of the attack, social media networks have been besieged with misinformation and fake videos related to the conflict. Footage from past battles and false claims from across the region are flooding the web.
In our current era of seemingly endless information, many are concerned with how Hamas could weaponize social media to skew circumstances in their favor. So far, main social media companies like X and Meta have not commented on the issue though many are awaiting answers.
