Fed Hikes Rates for First Time Since 2023

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates a quarter point on Wednesday, its first increase since 2023, bringing the benchmark rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%.

Policymakers voted 12-0 and said inflation “remains elevated,” pushed higher by oil prices from the Iran war and by tariffs. The committee pledged to “deliver price stability.”

Fed officials signaled another increase was likely this year, saying they don’t see inflation back to 2% until 2029. The move runs against President Trump’s stated wishes to see interest rate reductions instead.

The increase will eventually fall on borrowers. The average home mortgage rate is currently nearing 7%, new car loans average 7%, used ones 10.6%, and Americans are carrying $1.26 trillion in credit card debt.

News Helicopter Crash Kills 3 in LA

A news helicopter crashed in Chatsworth, a Los Angeles neighborhood, just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, killing both crew members aboard and a man on the ground.

Aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno, 38, and pilot George Marciniw were flying NewsChopper4 for NBC4 and Telemundo 52. They were covering an SUV and Metro bus collision that killed two people about a block and a half away.

A livestream of the flight caught whirring engine noise and a woman, believed to be Moreno, telling the pilot to pull up seconds before the crash.

Anchors learned of the crash while on the air. “We knew we’d lost contact with our people out there, and we’ve just received confirmation,” anchor Colleen Williams told viewers. Watch the emotional moment here.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the third victim as Edy Gutierrez Mejia, 29, a pedestrian. The NTSB and FAA are investigating.

US Household Income Hits 58-Year High

The Census Bureau reported that median household income rose 2.6% to $87,460 in 2025, the highest on record since tracking began in 1967. That is about $2,250 a year more than the year before.

The gains were not evenly spread. The top 10% of households saw income rise 1.7% to about $261,300, while the bottom 10% saw no meaningful change at roughly $20,000.

The official poverty rate fell for a third straight year to 10.2%, and child poverty hit a record low. A broader measure that counts medical bills and housing costs held steady at 13.1%.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent labeled the numbers, from 2025 data, “inconvenient facts” for the administration’s political opponents during House testimony.
