No state took in more of the great Swedish migration: between 1850 and 1930, roughly 1.3 million Swedes, about a fifth of Sweden’s entire population, left for America, and Minnesota’s farmland and lakes felt most like home. Today more than 400,000 Minnesotans claim Swedish ancestry, the most of any state.
