Answer: Golf. On February 6, 1971, Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard closed out his moonwalk by hitting two golf balls with a makeshift six-iron, a Wilson clubhead attached to a lunar sample-collecting tool that he smuggled aboard in a tube sock. His bulky pressurized spacesuit forced him to swing one-handed, and while he famously claimed the second shot went “miles and miles and miles,” modern analysis puts it closer to 40 yards. Still, that is roughly six times farther than it would have traveled on Earth, which was the point: Shepard wanted to demonstrate the Moon’s weaker gravity. The club now sits in the USGA Golf Museum in New Jersey, and the two balls remain on the lunar surface.
