Answer: A typical cumulus cloud can weigh over 1 million pounds. Scientists say if you assume an average cumulus cloud about a kilometer tall and a kilometer wide (.6 miles in either direction), then it would be about 1 billion cubic meters in volume and contain 500 million grams of water. That equates to 1.1 million pounds. But it’s less dense than dry air, so it floats. When it finally gets too heavy with water, it falls to the ground in the form of rain.
