Question: What surface in your house can sterilize itself?

Answer: Brass doorknobs, if you have them, can effectively sterilize themselves thanks to what’s known as the “oligodynamic effect.” The copper in brass is toxic to many bacteria, disrupting their cell membranes and killing them over a period of hours. But please note: The process isn’t instantaneous, doesn’t eliminate all pathogens equally, and a heavily soiled surface can overwhelm the effect, so brass shouldn’t be treated as a substitute for regular cleaning.
