Question: How many North Poles are there?

Answer: There are four recognized versions of the North Pole. First is the “true north” of the geographic North Pole, the point at which all meridians of longitude (the lines on a map that run north to south) converge.

Second is the North Magnetic Pole, which moves irregularly within approximately a 500-mile radius of the 90th parallel, or the geographic North Pole.

Third is the Geomagnetic North Pole, generated by the dynamo action of Earth’s core extending far into interplanetary space.

Last, and perhaps most intriguingly, is the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, which is determine not by physics but by location: It’s a little bit of Arctic Ocean that is the farthest from land. This North Pole is surrounded by nothing but water and ice for nearly 700 miles in any direction.
