Question: Americans used to hold waffle-eating parties. What were they called?
Answer: They were known as “waffle frolic” parties and were a custom from the 18th century into the 20th century. Hosts would serve a variety of dishes, but waffles hot from the iron were the crowning glory for sometimes very elaborate dinner parties. This was long before the age of Eggo, and there was no quick way to make waffles, so just making the waffles became part of the event.
