Feds Take Control of DC Police

President Trump on Monday placed Washington, D.C.’s police under direct federal control and deployed 800 National Guard troops in a sweeping crime crackdown.

Citing rising violence and homelessness, Trump said the move is authorized under the Home Rule Act for 30 days, with the Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terry Cole taking temporary command under Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Mayor Muriel Bowser called the takeover “unsettling” but said the city will comply, while the D.C. police union backed the decision.

Trump warned New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles could face similar interventions and pledged to clear homeless camps, repair infrastructure, and target gangs.

Steel Plant Blast Kills 1, Injures Dozens

An explosion at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works near Pittsburgh on Monday killed one person, left at least one person missing, and injured dozens more.

The blast, reported around 10:51 a.m., sent thick black smoke over the Monongahela Valley and prompted air-quality warnings within a one-mile radius. See photos here.

Emergency crews were working to rescue trapped workers as of Monday afternoon at the nation’s largest coking operation, which has faced repeated pollution violations in recent years.

Officials and environmental groups are calling for a full investigation into the cause of the disaster.

AOL Finally Shuts Down Dial-Up Service

AOL will shut down its historic dial-up internet service Sept. 30, closing the book on one of the web’s earliest on-ramps.

Once the world’s largest internet provider, AOL connected millions through phone lines, with its screeching modem tones and “You’ve Got Mail” greeting becoming part of pop culture in the ’90s.

By 2023, just 1% of U.S. households—about 163,000, many in rural areas—still relied on dial-up as their only way to access the Internet.
