Deadly Storm Strikes the Northeast

Severe storms hammered parts of Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey on Sunday, killing two as historic flooding damaged roads, bridges, and communities. You can see storm damage here.

Heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding in the tristate area where roads were turned into rivers, cars were submerged in fast-rising waters, and water rescues unfolded on Long Island and in Connecticut.

Storms produced as much as a foot of rain on some parts of western Connecticut late Sunday and early Monday. In Oxford, 65-year-old Ethelyn Joiner and 71-year-old Audrey Rostkowski were swept away by floodwaters to their deaths.

Officials said that the storms canceled more than 450 flights at Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, and John F. Kennedy airports.

Circle K Bids $38 Billion for 7-Eleven

The Japanese parent company of 7-Eleven has received a preliminary $38 billion takeover bid from the Canadian owner of Circle K stores.

If successful, the deal would be the largest-ever foreign buyout of a Japanese company and more than double Circle K’s presence in North America to over 20,000 stores.

Seven & i, the Japanese holding company that owns 7-Eleven, has formed a special committee to review the proposal.

Analysts suggest the takeover offer from Circle K’s owner, Canadian retail giant Alimentation Couche-Tard (ACT), could face tough scrutiny from regulators.

Phil Donahue Dies at 88

Talk show host Phil Donahue, a daytime television legend, died Sunday at age 88, surrounded by family, including his wife, actress Marlo Thomas.

Donahue gained fame in the 1970s and ’80s for pioneering a new type of daytime show that tackled hot-button issues and encouraged interaction between Donahue and audience members, particularly resonating with female viewers.

“The Phil Donahue Show,” which launched in Dayton, Ohio, in 1967, ran in syndication for 26 years, earning 20 Emmy Awards and a Presidential Medal of Freedom for Donahue. View his life in pictures here.
