White House: No Funds Left for Ukraine
The White House told Congress Monday that money to support Ukraine would run out by year’s end and that no more military aid was available unless a $61 billion new round of funding is approved.
The House GOP says it requires border security changes to help solve the migrant crisis as part of any bill to aid Ukraine. The Senate, meanwhile, has agreed on funding for Ukraine but is balking at an immigration overhaul.
Congress previously allocated $111 billion to assist Ukraine, but the White House said all but 3% of it is already spent. The GOP says it will filibuster any aid bill that doesn’t include border security.
Indonesian Volcano Erupts, Killing 11
Indonesia’s Marapi volcano erupted on Sunday, killing at least 11 mountain climbers and leaving 12 others unaccounted for. The search for the missing climbers was halted Monday when the volcano erupted again.
Warnings alerted visitors to avoid climbing, but 75 climbers were still stranded on the mountain when it began spewing thick columns of hot ash, as seen in this video.
Authorities rescued 52 of the climbers alive, but the search continues for others. Marapi, one of 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, has been active since January.
List: Ranking the Worst Winter States
A new list ranks every U.S. state by how miserable its winters are, weighing recreation against isolation, sunshine against bleak grayness, and then adding in snow shovels, terrifying commutes, and how long those mini-mountains of snowy sludge last.
The worst three winter states in the ranking are North Dakota, Minnesota, and Michigan. At the other end of the list, the three best winter states will shock no one: Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii.
The action is in the middle, where snowy states like Colorado do fine because that’s part of its appeal, vs. states like Iowa, whose winters can be surprisingly fierce. See where your state ranks here.
