Walz Exits Governor’s Race Amid Fraud Scandal
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz dropped his bid for a third term on Monday amid a growing fraud scandal in which billions of taxpayer dollars were allegedly swindled on his watch.
Explaining his decision, the Democrats’ 2024 vice presidential nominee said, “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota.”
Prosecutors have charged over 90 people for fraud involving bogus nonprofits set up to grab state funding for services to the homeless, hungry, and people needing daycare.
The Trump administration has deployed roughly 2,000 federal agents from Homeland Security and ICE to Minneapolis for a 30-day surge to investigate the schemes, with estimates of the theft ranging from at least $1 billion to possibly $9 billion or more.
Senator Amy Klobuchar is viewed as a top contender to jump into the Minnesota governor’s race.

Venezuela’s Maduro Pleads Not Guilty
Captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro declared himself “a decent man” and claimed he was “kidnapped” by U.S. forces during his first court appearance Monday in Manhattan.
The 63-year-old deposed dictator, wearing orange prison garb with shackled legs, pleaded not guilty to narco-terrorism charges while insisting, “I am still president of my country.”
The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the U.S. military operation, with U.N. Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo warning of potential escalation as Venezuela and its allies accused the Trump administration of illegal actions.
Meanwhile, the gray Nike Tech Fleece tracksuit Maduro wore during the capture sparked a surge in online searches and sold out within hours on Nike’s website after Trump shared the photo on Truth Social.

New Coins Mark America’s 250th Anniversary
The U.S. Mint unveiled commemorative coin designs celebrating America’s 250th birthday that will begin circulating this week, featuring one-year-only redesigns of the dime, quarter, and half-dollar with dual dates reading “1776 ~ 2026.”
The quarter features five different designs honoring the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address, replacing earlier proposed themes that included abolitionist Frederick Douglass, civil rights pioneer Ruby Bridges, and women’s suffrage. See the coins here.
The dime showcases Lady Liberty with “the winds of revolution” wafting through her hair and a liberty cap adorned with stars and stripes, while the half-dollar depicts the Statue of Liberty passing the torch to a new generation.
The semiquincentennial coins were authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, signed by President Trump, with acting Mint Director Kristie McNally saying the designs “depict the story of America’s journey toward a ‘more perfect union.'”
