Good Morning! On this day in 1928, pre-sliced bread was sold for the first time by the Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri, using a revolutionary bread-slicing machine invented by Otto Frederick Rohwedder. Ever since, any great consumer advance is measured against the invention of … well, sliced bread.

Assault Accusation Derails Platner Senate Race
Graham Platner, the Democrats’ Senate nominee in Maine, paused campaign events Monday after being accused of sexual assault, as Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, along with the Maine Democratic Party, urged him to withdraw from the race.
Jenny Racicot, 41, a woman Platner previously dated, alleges he assaulted her in late 2021 while he was heavily intoxicated, an accusation the candidate said was “categorically false.”
He said Monday that he’s weighing “the best path forward” with a deadline of July 13 to withdraw from the ballot. Democrats Ro Khanna, Ruben Gallego, and Ed Markey have rescinded their endorsements of him.
The oyster farmer and Marine veteran is challenging GOP Sen. Susan Collins in a race Democrats view as critical to retaking the Senate. Platner has weathered prior controversies, including having a since-covered tattoo resembling a Nazi SS symbol.

Team USA Eliminated From World Cup
Team USA’s World Cup dream ended last night in Seattle with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice to lead the Belgians, sending the Americans home and extending their quarterfinal drought to 24 years.
The game came amid controversy after President Trump confirmed he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the red card Folarin Balogun received against Bosnia-Herzegovina last week. FIFA suspended the ban, making Balogun available roughly 24 hours before kickoff, a move that drew sharp criticism from Belgium and UEFA.
Ultimately, though, his presence didn’t matter. Belgium struck first inside 10 minutes through De Ketelaere, who added a second goal just minutes after Malik Tillman’s free kick had briefly leveled things at 1-1. The knockout blow came in the 57th minute when Belgium scored an easy third goal, putting the game out of reach.
U.S. superstar Christian Pulisic, who went scoreless in the tournament, was subbed off with an injury moments later and was seen in tears on the bench.

Studio Readies 1st Full-Length Film Starring an AI
AI-generated “actor” Tilly Norwood, a controversial creation that Hollywood has heavily criticized, will star in a feature film billed by its studio as the first full-length AI film.
The movie, a comedy-drama titled Misaligned, is a coming-of-age story about an AI, infused with “existential AI chaos,” set in what the Particle6 studio calls the “Tillyverse.” It’s still in early development, and no release date has been set.
Norwood, unveiled by creator Eline Van der Velden in 2025, has drawn backlash from the SAG-AFTRA actors union, which said last year that the Norwood AI was “not an actor” and had “no life experience,” and that digital performers devalue “human artistry.”
