Sam Altman, fired Friday as CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, joined Microsoft’s artificial intelligence project Monday, sending shock waves through Silicon Valley and upending ChatGPT’s corporate future.
Altman’s firing stunned the industry. He had become the public face of AI globally, testifying in Congress in favor of regulating the technology. His hiring was seen as a major coup for Microsoft.
By Monday’s end, up to 700 OpenAI employees had signed a letter threatening to quit if the board wasn’t replaced. Emmett Shear, former CEO of the video-streaming platform Twitch, was named OpenAI’s new interim CEO.
List: Ranking The Freest States in America
A new report has ranked the freest states in America based on a combination of personal and economic freedoms, with New Hampshire at No. 1 and New York at No. 50, the least economically free state in the U.S.
Florida, South Dakota, Nevada, and Arizona are the top four freest states after New Hampshire. Some score higher on economic freedom and others on personal freedom, but this is the combined ranking of the two metrics.
The least-free states include California, New Jersey, and Oregon, primarily because the report views their high taxes and heavy regulations as impeding economic freedom. You can see how your state ranks across all three categories here.
Winter Storms Threaten Holiday Travel
Heavy storms could bring rain, snow, wind and even ice to large parts of the country this week, impacting travel from the Midwest to New England, as well as potentially “severe thunderstorms” in the South.
In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul directed all state agencies to be prepared and warned people to do their Thanksgiving grocery shopping early in the week. Meanwhile, forecasters say the threat of strong tornadoes is growing in the lower Mississippi Valley.
The storms will hit the middle of the country today and tomorrow and move to the East Coast Wednesday. For a detailed regional breakdown, here are forecasts and maps for the coming week.

Can fat really be good for my brain?
Natural fats offer powerful benefits to your body – and your brain. Your brain is comprised of about 60 percent fat.
Because our brain is made up largely of fat, our brains need fat to work well. In fact, billions of cells rely on fat to operate optimally. Without healthy fat, our brain doesn’t function as well. And when our brain is not operating at a high level, well, we all know how that affects the rest of our lives.
