Good morning! On this day in 1983, U.S. astronaut Guion S. Bluford became the first African American to travel into space. He served as a mission specialist aboard the shuttle orbiter Challenger and went on to fly three more missions.
Today is Wisdom Wednesday in our Rotator section, and we hope you find something that makes your life a little better—or at least makes you laugh. Mark Twain’s quotes might just do both!

Rep. Steve Scalise Diagnosed with Blood Cancer
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced yesterday that he has Multiple Myeloma, a treatable blood cancer.
Scalise said that he “wasn’t feeling like himself” for a few days and then discovered the cancer after getting blood work done.
“I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District,” Scalise, 57, said.
This isn’t his first major health scare; he survived life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound that he sustained while practicing for the congressional baseball game in 2017. | VP Biden Sent Emails Using Pseudonyms
President Biden sent over 5,000 emails using pseudonyms while he was Vice President, according to a response to a Freedom of Information Act request made in June 2022.
Despite confirming the existence of the email, the National Archives and Records Administration has failed to release any of the documents, and so they are being sued by the Southeastern Legal Foundation.
“The only way to preserve governmental integrity is for NARA to release Biden’s nearly 5,400 emails to SLF and thus the public. The American public deserves to know what is in them,” said the SLF’s general counsel.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer also demanded the records last month, citing their significance to the Biden family’s potential unethical business dealings in Ukraine. | American Students Are Failing at Math
Students across the country are still struggling to catch up on their math skills after falling behind during the 2020 pandemic.
Despite the federal pandemic relief money used to hire extra tutors and implement new math curriculums, test results for 4th and 8th graders have sunk to the lowest levels seen in 20 years in The National Report Card.
Students are still, on average, half a school year behind or more in math progress, and educators are finding it difficult to help students close the lost-knowledge gap: a phenomenon that Harvard Professor Andrew Ho calls “A generation’s worth of progress lost.”
